The Lions of Teranga's Rising Star Camara: From Aspirations to Afcon Favourites.

As I walk into the space, the young midfielder grabs a soccer ball he clings to until after the conversation. It’s a powerful symbol for a dream he has never let slip. “My sole focus was football; my mind was set on nothing else,” states this Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His resolve and raw talent won over teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the hardest person to convince didn't come from a sporting director or coach, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me playing soccer simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.

Overcoming Initial Obstacles

In time, on “a special day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to pursue his path in the game. A further barrier was his small stature, which deterred local club Casa Sports from offering him a contract.

Nevertheless, the famed academy – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After Camara was named the MVP in a regional tournament, the scouts were “shocked” to discover he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “They took me straight to the academy. They didn’t want me from going back home,” he recalled.

A Landmark Season and Continental Breakthrough

This move set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, though tired, he played in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his nation to the title and being named player of the tournament.

A month later, he signed for FC Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” says the 21-year-old. He resides by himself in Europe, a situation his family encourage to keep him focused.

Inspiration and Playing Style

Off-field noise aren't a problem for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and exceptional playing qualities. He is also a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and precision from dead-ball situations are notable assets. He admits he must to control his aggression, having been sent off early in his tenures at each French club. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he jokes.

Monaco, Teammates and Future Ambitions

With his current club, he values the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” Camara noted.

Currently, his focus is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England in their own country…,” he states, referencing a historic 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

On a potential transfer to the English top flight, he is focused on Monaco at present. “I feel really comfortable here,” he affirms. However, he's frequently ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about targeting the main top prize down the line.

“We are the favourites – that's the reality. Having beaten England in their own country… it instills confidence.”

Looking ahead, Lamine Camara combines humble beginnings, steely determination, and grand ambitions targeting to lead Senegal to continental glory and forge his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
