The Game UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller Merging Survival Horror and Among Us Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several fascinating future games, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive experience where a girl containing multiple human souls within her must escape from a maze of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Within her reside four separate souls, each with unique anxieties and drives. These souls can seize control spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated phobias upon her suddenly.
Based on showcased footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie hospital, though additional clips depict the main character navigating a desolate church.
A World of Individual Horror
"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to others can activate something primal inside us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are specific to each person."
The central mechanic revolves around controlling the persona that emerges at a particular moment. However, these souls will change against your will as you play. During exploration, every persona's fears become exaggerated and assault the protagonist one after another. As the persona changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Unsettling Visuals and a Fatal Decision
At first glance, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by orderlies all sporting the same face, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the waiting room have enormous flowers growing from their necks should be. Flowers are an ever-present element, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "All four personas asserts that the body belongs to them," notes a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
Once players believes a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, because every entity can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the true [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The final entity standing could be a fraud. In any case, your choices are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is can be follow on platforms.
