A moral purpose of a functioning society is to forestall the stronger from attacking and exploiting the less powerful. Failing that, we could find ourselves trapped in a conflict of all against all where might makes right prevails.

But, it is a delicate construct, often broken by those who choose to misuse their authority. Maintaining it necessitates that the those in charge have enough integrity to refrain from seeking short-term wins, and that society hold them accountable should they falter.
Unfettered might is not right. It results in uncertainty, chaos, and war.
Every time individuals, companies, or nations that are advantaged target and use those that are less so, the fabric of society frays. If such aggression are left unchecked, the structure collapses. Without intervention, the world can plunge into disorder and conflict. It has happened before.
We now inhabit a global community marked by extreme inequality. Political and economic power are held by fewer hands than in modern history. This encourages the powerful to leverage their position against the less fortunate because they act with a sense of untouchable.
The fortunes of certain billionaires is difficult to fathom. The reach of major corporations in technology, energy, and aerospace spans a vast portion of the world. AI is poised to consolidate wealth and power to a greater degree. The offensive capability of the leading countries is unprecedented in the annals of time.
Empowered by complicit legislators and a pliant judicial body, the highest office has been turned into the most powerful and unaccountable entity of state power in recent memory.
Combine these factors and you see the threat.
An unbroken thread ties past lawless actions to present-day menaces. Both were premised on the overconfidence of absolute power.
There is parallel dynamics in international affairs: in wars of aggression, in expansive ambitions, and in the global depredation by massive conglomerates.
But, raw power does not create right. It fosters fragility, revolution, and armed conflict.
History shows that rules and conventions to limit the powerful also protect them. Absent these limits, their endless appetite for greater influence and riches eventually lead to their downfall – and with them their corporations, nations, or empires. And risk global conflict.
This blatant disregard for rules will cast a long shadow over international stability – and the very idea of civilization – for a long time.
