No less than 64 Killed in Rio de Janeiro's Biggest Law Enforcement Operation on Gangs
A minimum of 64 individuals lost their lives in a law enforcement action against the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in Rio de Janeiro's northern districts - the largest and deadliest raid in the region's records.
Four law enforcement personnel were included in the fatalities during Operation Containment in the communities of Alemão and Penha, government representatives said. In excess of 80 individuals were taken into custody.
Fierce clashes erupted when around 2,500 law enforcement officers moved in on Tuesday early hours. The Comando Vermelho reacted using shooting, burning barricades and dropping bombs from drones, officials stated.
The United Nations human rights body stated it felt "shocked" by the security action, calling for "immediate and thorough inquiries".
Mission Consequences
The area of favelas near the aerial transportation hub is regarded as the headquarters of a major organised crime groups.
Local authorities said no less than 50 of the fatalities were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".
Dozens of people were hurt, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.
Resident Accounts
Locals have compared the mountainous region - inhabited by approximately 300,000 individuals - to a "war zone" since the mission commenced.

Organized Crime Spread
The Comando Vermelho organization has been increasing their territory across the Rio state, increasing drug trafficking routes and dominance over the slum communities.
Rio's police reported in excess of 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were confiscated in the mission, along with dozens of firearms.

The combined action by various security forces was preceded by a year-long investigation.
Dozens of the suspects are believed to be affiliates of a group from the Pará state who are at the moment taking refuge in Rio de Janeiro.
