Giants QB Wilson Responds at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Quarterback Remarks
NY Giants quarterback Russell Wilson didn't mince words on social media this week, responding to latest comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Tasteless... but not surprised...," Wilson declared on X. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."
Wilson's response directly referenced the notorious bounty scandal controversy from 2009-11, when Payton led the Saints.
During that period, the NFL determined that the Saints had rewarded players for making aggressive tackles on opponents. As a result, Payton received a suspension from the NFL for a full year.
The Cause of the Latest Exchange
Wilson's response came after Payton delivered remarks following the Broncos' remarkable comeback win over the New York. Payton suggested that the Giants had "discovered new energy" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.
Moreover, Payton hinted that he had informed team owner John Mara that he would prefer facing Wilson instead of Dart.
"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We were hoping that change would've happened well after our game,'" Payton stated.
Background of the Wilson-Payton Partnership
- The quarterback joined the Denver from Seattle in 2022 and inked a 5-year, $245 million extension.
- The Broncos finished 4 wins and 11 losses in his debut year before the team brought in Payton, who was coming back to coaching after a stint in broadcasting.
- Payton replaced Wilson late into the 2023 campaign, a move that prevented the player from suffering an injury.
If Wilson remained on the roster by spring 2024, his $37 million salary for 2025 would have been locked in. In the end, Wilson was let go, ending the contentious breakup between the player and his mentor.
