Democrats Criticize Trump After He Claims They Should Face Death Penalty
Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated anger after former President Donald Trump accused a group of Democratic congress members of being "turncoats" and asserted they should be taken into custody and penalized "by death" following their posting of a disputed video.
The Content That Triggered the Controversy
The recorded message, shared on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic elected officials who in the past acted in defense or security roles.
"Like us, you all made an oath to safeguard and support this constitution," the representatives affirmed in the brief video. "Currently, the threats to our democratic foundation aren't just from overseas, but from within our own country. Our statutes are clear, you can refuse illegal orders, you can reject illegal orders, you have to reject illegal orders. No one has to follow directives that violate the law or our founding principles."
Trump's Angry Reply
The recorded statement seemed to prompt a heated reaction from the ex-president.
On Thursday morning, Trump published on Truth Social: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another message, he wrote: "This represents really serious, and Risky to our Country. Their words cannot be allowed to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a comment that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Officials Respond
Following Trump's statements on that day, Top Democrats issued a combined announcement denouncing the remarks.
"Violent politics has no place in America," they stated. "Congress members who participated in the video all acted our country with exceptional national pride and honor. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's offensive and risky calls for execution against elected officials, and call on Republican lawmakers to vigorously do the same."
The opposition officials also said that they had been in contact with law enforcement "to guarantee the safety of these representatives and their families."
"Donald Trump must immediately delete these unhinged digital publications and retract his dangerous rhetoric before he leads to violence," the announcement continued.
Lawmakers' Firm Answer
The lawmakers who were featured in the video also released a response.
"We serve as former service members and security experts who love this country and swore an pledge to protect and defend the national charter of the United States," they said. "Our pledge continues forever, and we plan to maintain it. No warning, intimidation, or incitement will prevent us from that fundamental obligation."
"The most revealing aspect is that the former president deems it liable to punishment by execution for us to restate the law," they continued. "Armed forces members should know that we have their backs as they execute their vow to the founding principles and obligation to follow only lawful orders. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They stated: "The entire nation must come together and condemn the ex-president's demands for our murder and partisan aggression. This is a period for ethical certainty."
Additional Governmental Comments
The Opposition leader also censured Trump's comments and published on social media: "Let's be crystal clear: the ex-commander in chief is requesting the execution of elected officials."
He continued: "This constitutes an direct THREAT. All senators, each house member, all citizens – irrespective of political affiliation – should censure this immediately and unconditionally."
The Conservative official supported Trump's allegation that the Democrats had participated in "sedition", characterizing the video as "extremely improper", commenting: "This constitutes very dangerous, you have important representatives of the legislature advising military personnel to disobey orders, I think that's historic in American history."
The Conservative representative also reportedly told media outlets that in what he reviewed of Trump's publications, Trump was "defining the offense of treason" but that "attorneys have to parse the wording and decide all that."
Administration Statement
During a White House press conference on Thursday afternoon, when inquired by a journalist, "Is the president want to execute members of Congress?", the administration spokesperson answered: "No."
"We should understand about what the former president is responding to," the official stated. "We see active officials of the US Congress who conspired to arrange a recorded statement to members of the national defense, to serving soldiers urging them to ignore the executive's lawful orders."
She stated: "The sanctity of our military relies on the command structure, and if that system is broken, it can lead to casualties, it can lead to chaos, and that is exactly what these congressional representatives ... are fundamentally encouraging."
