A Tooth Fairy Tale Review: Cartoon Adventure with a Sprinkling of Kid-Appropriate Tween Romance

In this animated journey for preteens, the fairy community focuses on gathering baby teeth of sleeping children and placing gold under their pillows. Board-riding teenage rebel fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about devoting his life to gathering baby teeth—a feeling that’s completely understandable. He is just a bit more interested in the underlying economics behind it all: the fairies hand over the molars to mysterious goblins, who provide metal as payment. However, Van’s interest is piqued when he catches sight of a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who proves to be far from the ugly gnome he expected.

A Forbidden Connection and Common Enemy

Everything is prepared for an adventure with a light sprinkling of teen romance (though it’s perfectly appropriate for younger kids). The goblin and fairy communities are estranged from one another, and nothing fuels the thrill of the forbidden to bring people as one. Both groups portrayed in the film are incredibly similar, yet both maintain biased views about the opposite side. The fairies are said to be self-centered types, prone to stealing anything they want, while the goblins are allegedly dim-witted, smelly, and backward, but are in fact bright and advanced in technology.

Of course, this scenario requires a shared foe to unite against, and this is duly provided in the form of a group of vicious spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret about their intentions: they want to eat the goblins and fairies, and they serve as quite savage, though not especially competent, villains.

Target Audience and Final Thoughts

There aren’t very many animated films aimed at the kind of audience that is starting to experience first crushes, but aren’t yet old enough for whatever 14-year-olds view these days in lieu of Twilight. If your child is in the right age bracket, this is unlikely to become their new favorite movie, but you could do worse.

The Tooth Fairy Story arrives in Scottish cinemas starting October 10 and across the United Kingdom from 24 October.
